Your Guide to Career  Planning Tips

In today’s business world, when everything is changing and evolving very quickly, managers and professionals have to take control of their own career planning. The times when your boss appraised your skills and abilities and sent you off to a training session are gone. You are the only one in charge and responsible for developing your career and your professional-self.

Here are some career planning tips to help you plan better:

Start with a fair assessment of where you are, and what do you currently have? What skills and strengths do you possess? What kind of expertise? Secondly, identify your “brand”. What is it that you do best? Where do you shine? What are the areas in which you are not merely good, you are excellent? What stimulates and inspires you the most? What are you passionate about? Take the time to write them all down.

Visualize – what would your ideal career look like? What marketplace would allow you to use your strengths and unique talents? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Look back at those career experiences that made you happy and allowed you the space to leverage your skills. Elevate those experiences by analyzing what made them satisfactory. What positive elements do you still preserve from them? Best practices and your expertise are going to be the foundation of your future career. Even if you decide to completely change sector, you still need to hold-on to those gems of the past, build upon them and develop you unique “brand”.  It all starts with the inner you! By becoming aware of your talents, special skills, special EXPERTISE, you will be able to find the right tools to change or enhance your career.

Plan – it’s time to develop an action plan! The action plan is the tool that will show you the steps needed to go from where you are to where you want to be. It will help you focus on activities that are mandatory to attain your goals. It will also develop a measurable path with benchmarks and indicators for success. Start your plan by developing 2-3 main goals for your future career. To help develop those goals start with the future image of you in 5 years. Apply the SMART Model when crafting your goals. It  structures the process. Your next step is listing all the activities needed to reach those goals. This is the meat of your plan – the action part!!! If your goal is to change industry, then your activities would be:

- Do research on the industry, the income potential, the hiring rates etc. – by June, 2012
- Sign-up for a training course on XXXXX – by Sept, 2012

- Update and polish my resume – by Oct, 2012

By doing this you will be able to keep track of the accomplishments. For example, if by Sept, 2012 you have not even done your research on the industry, you are definitely not serious about changing or improving your career.
